BALTIC 78 SUPER BALTIC 5

The canting-keeled Baltic 78 was arguably one of the most hi-tech, high performance cruiser/racers when she was launched in 2000.

It was calculated at the time that this Reichel/Pugh-designed yacht could, in certain conditions, sail 3.5 knots faster than an identical yacht with a conventional fixed keel.

An additional requirement was that the canting keel mechanism should not encroach into the accommodation.

So, the canting system had to fit under the cabin sole, leaving just 50cm to accommodate the pivot mechanism and ram linkages for the keel.

As Lupa of London, she was regularly campaigned and enjoyed considerable success on the race course.
