A NEW BLUEWATER PERFORMANCE CRUISER TAKES TO THE OPEN WATER

Baltic Yachts has successfully delivered the Baltic 121 Alice, a 37-metre all-carbon performance cruiser designed for fast, comfortable and capable blue water cruising.

Designed by Malcolm McKeon Yacht Design with an interior by Adam Lay Studio, Alice was conceived as a yacht for extensive family cruising, combining the performance and responsiveness of a modern sailing yacht with the comfort, safety and reliability required for long-range adventures.

Built at Baltic Yachts’ yard in Jakobstad, Finland, Alice features an all-carbon structure, a telescopic keel, generous sail plan and contemporary glass deckhouse. Her keel can be lowered from 4.15 metres to 6.4 metres, giving the yacht the flexibility to access a wide range of cruising grounds while retaining the stability and performance required for offshore sailing.

“Alice was born from a clear vision: to create a fast, capable and comfortable bluewater cruising yacht that could be enjoyed by the whole family while delivering exceptional sailing performance,” says Malcolm McKeon. “The yacht has been designed to be easily driven, rewarding to sail and capable of undertaking extended passages in comfort and safety. It has been a great opportunity to work closely with an experienced owner and a talented team of collaborators, and the result is a yacht that combines advanced engineering, refined design and genuine cruising capability.”

Performance was a key driver throughout the design process. The all-carbon structure provides significant weight savings and structural efficiency, while the generous sail plan and telescopic keel maximise both speed and versatility.

The ease and simplicity of sailing Alice is one of the yacht’s defining characteristics. Designed with limited crew in mind, she can leave the dock and be under sail within minutes, with her captive halyard and in boom-furling mainsail and furling headsails all easily controlled and trimmed.

“Alice is a true marvel in the ease and simplicity with which she gets underway,” says Ryan Taylor, Delivery Captain at Baltic Yachts. “From leaving the dock to setting sail takes just minutes, which makes her particularly easy to handle with a limited crew. Once the sails are set and trimmed, she performs and manoeuvres like a much smaller high-performance sailing yacht. She is an absolute joy to sail on any wind angle, and I think she has all the qualities to become a star performer in the superyacht regatta scene should her owner choose to compete.”

The exterior design is defined by its strong connection between inside and out. Extensive glazing in the deckhouse provides panoramic views and brings natural light deep into the interior, while the fixed bimini provides shelter and shade both underway and at anchor.

“Alice’s owner wanted a natural, textural interior with a robust and comfortable environment that would feel safe and inviting for the whole family,” says Adam Lay. “We used materials and textures that become more interesting the closer you look at them. The brushed walnut, textured veneers, fabrics and lighting all work together to create a calm, tactile environment that connects the interior with the natural world outside.”

A particular feature of the interior is the use of subtle references to the sea and the natural environment. Textured veneer inserts in the cabins create an effect reminiscent of ripples on the water, while wall lights inspired by tree branches and fabrics selected for their natural textures reinforce the biophilic character of the interior.

For the owner’s representative, Daniel Calascione of A2B Marine Projects, the project has also highlighted the importance of the people behind the yacht.

“Working with Baltic Yachts is unique. The craftsmanship of the Finnish people is unlike any other craftsmanship in the world,” says Calascione. “There is a meticulous attention to detail and a real sense of pride in everyone working on the project. Building boats is an emotional art, but here in Finland there is an extra passion. You see that every boat that is delivered carries a little piece of everyone’s heart with it.”

He adds: “The straightforward, honest and transparent way of working, combined with the work ethic throughout the yard, is what sets Baltic Yachts apart. It has made this project a real pleasure to be part of.”

Alice represents the latest expression of Baltic Yachts’ approach to custom yacht building: bringing together lightweight composite construction, advanced engineering, performance sailing and carefully considered interiors, while tailoring every element to the way her owner intends to use the yacht.

With her delivery now completed, Alice left Finland ready to begin the next chapter of her life at sea — designed to cover long distances under sail, explore new cruising grounds and provide a comfortable and rewarding home for her family wherever she goes.
