Finnish Olympic star joins Baltic Yachts in Palma

28 March 2023

Olympic match racing medallist Mikaela Wulff has joined Baltic Yachts’ Service and Refit team in Palma de Mallorca where she is providing project management support and representing the company at key regattas.

Mikaela, whose Olympic sailing career included winning a Bronze medal for Finland at the London 2012 event in Weymouth, where she crewed for Silja Lehtinen in the Elliott 6m match racing class, will not only bring her business administration degree skills to the fore, but also her deep sailing experience. It ranges from the ARC Transatlantic Rally in 2001 sailing aboard her family’s Forgus 36 when she was just 11, to today’s highly competitive Club Swan 50 Mediterranean circuit.

Born in Helsinki 32 years ago, she says her first outing in a sailing boat was at the age of three months and she hasn’t really looked back! After a 17-year Olympic career which involved campaigns for Beijing, London, Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo she moved onto the regatta circuits in the Mediterranean and Caribbean. It was at Les Voiles de St Tropez where she was racing aboard the Sparkman & Stephens classic yawl Circe when she met the Baltic team.

Mikaela joined the Baltic Yachts’ Service and Refit team in Palma de Mallorca in  November 2021 and has been heavily involved in a wide number of refit projects including the Swan 115 Jasi and managing the company’s Matterport 3D 360° scanner which creates onboard virtual reality viewing of yachts.

“The scans help us to plan projects in detail and enables us to gain access to boats without having to leave the office,” said Mikaela. “It’s also a great way to update clients on how their project is progressing.”

Mikaela uses her business administration degree skills from the University of Applied Sciences in Helsinki to help with all aspects of project management which at any one time can involve more than a dozen yachts. Apart from the larger projects she is involved with the important role of help and spare part procurement for smaller yachts which are increasingly using the Baltic Yachts’ Service and Refit operation Palma.

As projects near completion Mikaela uses her considerable sailing skills to take part in sea trials to bring projects to a conclusion.
